Image-to-image artificial intelligence (AI) is a generative AI technique. Think of it as making dramatic changes to an image you already have. One example would be turning a cityscape into a beach scene. To do that, it uses machine learning (ML) models trained on huge image datasets to recognize patterns and styles. As such, it lets users upload images, choose modifications, and create captivating AI-generated images.

How Does Image-to-Image AI Work?

Image-to-image AI follows only three major steps—sign up or log in to an app of your choice, upload the image you wish to modify, and customize the output.

Image-to-Image AI Steps

You can modify images by using specific features. You can, for instance, choose references specifically for the content, style, and character.

When you upload a base image of yourself, for example, you can opt to retain your profile and remove the background by using background remover. Then, choose Content Reference and type something like “Put a beach scene with other people in the background.” You will then have a new image.

For Style Reference, AI can learn the style of your uploaded image and then create a new image based on your description. For example, if you upload an image of Salvador Dalí’s The Persistence of Memory, type “surreal illustration, schoolyard, trees, clearly visible light and shadow intersections”. You’ll get a piece of art in the style of Salvador Dali.

For Character Reference, you can change the way you’re dressed. If your original image is wearing a shirt and shorts, for instance, you can type “Make the main character wear a bathing suit.” After all that, you’ll have a complete image, or you can make other enhancements.

You can optimize the image by adjusting its strength and scale or size.

How Does ML Help Recognize Images?

AI-based optical character recognition (OCR) algorithms use ML to recognize characters and even words in images. They use convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for deep image recognition using a process called “convolution.”

Convolution is essentially a mathematical operation that allows two sets of information like people and the background to merge. In CNN’s case, ML applies convolution to the input data (i.e., picture) to filter the information and produce a feature map. Think of it as dividing an entire picture into tiny blocks and filter every bit of it.

CNNs, however, require well-organized datasets to train the image classification model that image-to-image AI uses. That said, every image must be clearly visible. That is the only way image classification can analyze photos using deep learning models to identify and recognize image content to the time of day. That lets you quickly shift from a city to a beach or change the way you are dressed.

What Are the Benefits of Image-to-Image AI?

These days, even people who cannot draw or aren’t artists can create great images with image-to-image AI’s help. The technique provides users with several benefits.

No Experience Necessary

Anyone, even newbies, can use the technique. It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned designer or a beginner. It lets you create professional-looking visuals even if you don’t have extensive design experience.

Speed Up Visual Creation

The technique allows you to generate unique variations of a single existing image. You can use them to generate new ideas and spark inspiration. Or use them to fill in different marketing avenues. You can use a different image for every kind of device or collateral—brochures, posters, flyers, webpages, and so on. Best of all, it only takes minutes instead of hours that you may spend on taking photos on location.

Save on Costs

Since the technique lets you change the background of any image you already have on hand, you need not actually go to specific locations to take pictures. You can also reduce costs you’d otherwise spend hiring photographers and crew, including featured personalities or stock photos.

What Are the Downsides of Image-to-Image AI?

It’s never all roses when using AI-generated content, though. Here are some downsides to using image-to-image AI.

  • While AI-generated images can be visually compelling, they may lack the emotional depth and authenticity that human-generated images have.
  • In some cases, AI-generated images may appear unrealistic or pixelated.
  • Dependence on AI can diminish creativity and critical thinking skills. Instead of enhancing an artist’s talent with practice and experience, it can lead to overreliance on technology.
  • AI-generated images can be manipulated or misused for malicious intent.
  • The legal implications surrounding using AI-generated images are still evolving. Issues related to intellectual property rights, licensing, and liabilities may arise.
  • Using image-to-image AI services may involve sharing sensitive data raising concerns about data privacy and security breaches.

AI continues to make tasks easier and faster to do. And that’s true for image creation and editing with the introduction of image-to-image AI. While the technique provides many benefits, users must also be aware of its potential drawbacks, too.
